Why a full night’s sleep beats an extra hour of study

A doctor’s view of the most common mistake NEET students make.

By Dr Varun Murthy

Ask any NEET aspirant what they would do with one more hour in the day, and most will say “study”. Ask a doctor, and the answer is “sleep”. Here is why.

Memory is made while you sleep

What a student learns during the day is only stored during deep sleep. Cut the night short and the day’s learning is simply lost — however many hours were spent on it. A student who studies until two in the morning and wakes at five has worked very hard to remember very little.

Recognition needs a rested brain

NEET does not ask students to reproduce what they memorised. It asks them to recognise the right idea inside an unfamiliar question, quickly. That skill — seeing the pattern — is the first thing a tired brain loses. A well-rested average student will outperform an exhausted brilliant one on the day.

Stress compounds without rest

A long year of preparation is a marathon. Students who do not sleep become anxious, fall ill more often, and lose the steady confidence that a good result needs. Every serious study of student wellbeing says the same thing.

What we do about it

On our campus, lights out is fixed and nobody trades sleep for study. The day begins with yoga and includes an hour of games every afternoon. Three hours of revision happen every evening — and then the day ends. Our students work very hard. They also sleep. That is not a compromise; it is the method.

If your child is preparing for NEET at home, the single most useful thing you can do is protect their sleep. Everything else is easier after that.
